Ingredients & substitutions

Here are some helpful notes about the key ingredients for this holiday drink:

  • Cranberries: you can use either fresh or frozen cranberries.
  • Granulated sugar can be replaced with an equal amount of honey, if you prefer.
  • Mint leaves: spearmint is a popular choice for cocktails. Did you know that there is also Mojito mint? It has a slightly sweeter and less minty flavor than spearmint.
  • Lime juice: fresh lime juice is ideal for the best flavor. If limes are not available, oranges can be substituted. Cranberry and orange are a great combination.
  • White rum: opt for high-quality white rum, also known as silver or light rum. Its mellow flavor complements the other ingredients. Feel free to experiment with flavored rums to add an extra dimension of flavor. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and add extra sparkling water.
  • Sparkling water: any type of sparkling water can be used, but club soda is a good choice because it doesn’t have any added flavor.
