Homemade Baileys Irish Cream
This homemade Baileys Irish Cream is rich, creamy, and ready in under a minute. It’s perfect for DIY Christmas gifts, adding to coffee and desserts, or mixing into festive cocktails.

I love edible Christmas gifts, like Italian biscotti or flavored salts. There’s something special about giving something you’ve made yourself, and this homemade Irish cream recipe has become a reader favorite over the years.
It’s incredibly easy to prepare. Everything comes together in the blender, and once it’s ready, you can pour it into small glass bottles and decorate them with one of my free printable labels.
Of course, you can enjoy it yourself, too! Serve it chilled or over ice, add a splash to your coffee or hot chocolate, or pour it over vanilla ice cream. You can also use it in brownies, cakes, or holiday cocktails. And if you’re planning a festive gathering, my cranberry mojito and pomegranate Moscow mule are two more drinks to try.
Recipe Highlights
- Budget-friendly: Costs less than store-bought Baileys.
- Simple ingredients: Nothing complicated, and you know exactly what’s going into it.
- Make it your own: Adjust the coffee, chocolate, or whiskey to your taste.
- Easy to make ahead: Prepare it in advance and keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to serve or gift it.
Key Ingredients & Substitutions
- Whiskey: I use Jameson, but another good-quality Irish whiskey will do. Some readers have tried bourbon, brandy, and flavored spirits. See their suggestions below.
- Cream: Heavy cream creates a richer texture, while half-and-half makes a lighter version. Regular milk is too thin.
- Sweetened condensed milk: Adds sweetness and creaminess. Evaporated milk won’t give the same results.
- Chocolate syrup: Hershey’s is my favorite, but any brand works, including sugar-free.
- Instant coffee: Choose regular, espresso, or decaf granules, depending on how strong you like the coffee flavor. You can leave it out if you prefer. The taste will be slightly different, but the recipe will still work.
- Vanilla extract: Pure vanilla is my preference. You can also try almond, peppermint, or orange extract. For a holiday twist, add a little cinnamon or pumpkin spice.
See the recipe card below for a detailed ingredient list and step-by-step instructions.
How to Make Homemade Baileys
- Blend the base: Add the cream, condensed milk, instant coffee, chocolate syrup, and vanilla to a blender. Blend on low speed for about 30 seconds.
- Add the whiskey: Slowly pour in the whiskey while blending on low. Continue for a few seconds, just until combined.
- Taste and adjust: Taste the mixture and add a little more whiskey, chocolate, or vanilla if needed.
- Bottle and Chill: Pour into clean glass bottles with tight-fitting lids and refrigerate.
Elena’s Tip: Keep the blender on low speed. High speed can cause the cream to thicken or separate. If this happens, strain the mixture through a fine sieve and gently skim off any foam from the top.

Recipe Variations
Over the years, readers have shared some creative variations of this Irish cream recipe. Here are a few of their ideas.
Different spirits
- Southern Comfort and Amaretto: Mark combined the two.
- Brandy or bourbon: Brenda tried brandy, while Carol preferred bourbon.
- Kahlua: Jo replaced the coffee and chocolate syrup with Kahlua.
- Screwball whiskey: Lorry added an extra tablespoon of chocolate syrup and skipped the coffee.
- Fireball whiskey: Kathy made a cinnamon version.
- Drambuie and Cointreau: Arvind replaced the coffee with Drambuie, then added Cointreau and a little more chocolate syrup.
Other variations
- Cocoa powder: Melanie mixed ½ teaspoon with a little cream instead of chocolate syrup.
- Orange and chocolate: Rebecca added orange extract and extra chocolate.
- Pumpkin spice: Chris added ½ teaspoon of pumpkin spice and ½ cup of pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling).
Dairy-free option
- Coconut milk: Wade made a dairy-free version using homemade sweetened condensed milk and coconut milk instead of cream.
How to Package Homemade Baileys for Gifts
Small glass bottles with tight-fitting lids are ideal. Decorate them with a ribbon, a handwritten tag with storage and serving instructions, and a sprig of greenery or holly for a festive touch.
The bottles in my photos came from Lakeland, but they’ve unfortunately been discontinued. You can find similar swing-top bottles at Target, kitchenware shops, or online at Amazon and Etsy.
Free Printable Labels
I’ve also created free printable Homemade Bailey’s Labels to decorate your bottles.
Here’s how to use them:
- Print the labels on adhesive sticker paper.
- Cut them out.
- Peel off the backing and stick them onto your bottles.
Storage & Make Ahead
Store homemade Baileys in tightly sealed bottles in the refrigerator for up to 2 months. Shake well before serving. You can prepare it in advance for entertaining or Christmas gifts.

How To Make It: Homemade Baileys Irish Cream
Ingredients
- 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream or half & half
- 1 can (14 oz – 397 g) sweetened condensed milk
- 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup
- 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1⅔ cups (400 ml) Irish whiskey, I used Jameson
Equipment
- Glass bottles with tight-fitting lids
Instructions
Blend the base
- Add the cream, sweetened condensed milk, instant coffee, chocolate syrup, and vanilla to a blender. Blend on low speed for about 30 seconds.
Add the whiskey
- With the blender still running on low, slowly pour in the whiskey. Blend for a few more seconds, just until smooth.
Taste and adjust
- Taste and add more whiskey, chocolate syrup, or vanilla if desired.
Bottle and chill
- Pour the mixture into clean glass bottles with tight-fitting lids. Refrigerate for up to 2 months and shake before each use.
Notes
- Yield: Approximately 1 liter (4¼ cups). You can double or triple the recipe.
- Avoid separation: Blend on low speed and stop as soon as the ingredients are combined. If it curdles, straining may remove some lumps but won’t necessarily restore a smooth texture.
- Storage: Keep refrigerated in tightly sealed bottles for up to 2 months.
- Serving size: Approximately 37 ml.

That Bailey’s recipe is amazing I put a bit less whiskey because I like a bit less alcohol taste We will never buy Bailey’s again.
Thank you very much for the recipe

So glad you liked this recipe, Marc! Thank you for the feedback!
I tweaked my version a bit choosing 1 cup of whipping cream and 1 cup of 1/2 and 1/2 along with 2 cups of Crown Royal Maple whiskey. It was amazing. Now it’s all the family wants from me on special occasions.
Thanks for the base recipe. It’s awesome.
Your version sounds incredible! Thank you for the feedback! :)
Love this. Making it again to night
Sounds fabulous! I’m going to the store for coffee granules right now. Thank you fr one Elena to another!!!
I hope you will like it! :)
This turned out absolutely Delicious! Like perfect spot on delicious! I added a bit extra cocoa, a lotta bit more of whiskey, and skipped the instant coffee. Made the best Irish coffee ever created♥️(topped with large dollaps of whipped cream and shards of dark chocolate to finish☺️) Thank you so much for sharing!
So glad you liked it, Rebecca! Thank you for the feedback! :)
I added a little more half and half, mixing some soy milk with the fat free half and half. I also used fat free sweetened condensed milk. Additionally, I made a 3-cup serving of espresso and put cocoa in it because I didn’t have any instant coffee or chocolate sauce. Finally, I used Cutty Sark (it was about half the price of the Jameson). It. Is. So. Good! This recipe works, and you can make your own twists- it’s so adaptable. Love this, thank you!
I’ve made this with whiskey and rum and loved it both ways! Bailey’s is one of my favorite drinks and this is such a cheaper option. Thanks!!!
I made a keto version of this, replacing the chocolate syrup and condensed milk with a homemade keto condensed milk and melted sugarfree milk chocolate. It was delicious and will definitely make this again!
I used the caramel instead of the sweetened condensed milk comes in the same kind of a can and it turned out delicious
What a great idea, Linda! :)
Loved this recipe as a starting point. After the first batch I made some tweaks to suit my personal tastes: 1) I used only about 12 oz of the sweetened condensed milk (instead of the full 14) and 2) I used 2/3 C of heavy cream and 1/3 C of half-and-half (instead of 1 C heavy cream). The flavor I made was chocolate raspberry (added 1/4 C Torani Raspberry Syrup and an additional tablespoon of chocolate syrup). Will also be making an English toffee (with flavored coffee), a butterscotch (with butterscotch liqueur) and a creamsicle (with a little extra vanilla and some Grand Marnier). The possibilities are endless!
This recipe is delicious. I made it once just as written and then I made it again with orange extract and extra chocolate and it was also amazing! I used bourbon in both cases, Maker’s Mark once and cheap the 2nd time but it was equally delicious both times.
Your version sounds delicious Rebecca! :)
Good info as I was wondering about using bourbon. I once added Bailey’s to bourbon and literally could not drink it….was awful. But wondered if I could use bourbon in a homemade Baileys recipe. Will be giving this a try this weekend.
SOOO good. Followed your instructions, and it turned out perfectly. Even made a second batch the next day so we wouldn’t run out over the holidays. Next year, I’m making a ton of this for gifts. Thanks for the great gift idea!
Glad you liked it, Christina! Happy Holidays! :)
Could I whisk instead of blend?
yes, you can :)
Yummy, I made it tonight with Jim beam, and it’s so moorish. Thank you and merry Christmas
Thank you for the feedback, Anne-Marie! Merry Christmas! :)
Just made this with peanut butter whiskey ( screwball) added an extra tablespoon of chocolate syrup and omitted the coffee. It was incredible!
Peanut butter whiskey?!?! It sounds AMAZING!
I have to say I am really impressed with this simple recipe. As someone that makes his own liquors I found this to be a super easy way to duplicate the taste of a high quality Irish Cream. I even compared them side by side and found that the recipe provided gave a smoother silkier mouthfeel that was pleasant.
Thanks for taking the time to share this.
Thank you for the feedback, Anthony!
