These sweet potato dinner rolls are soft, fluffy, and slightly chewy. They are made with mashed sweet potatoes which keeps them moist and adds a beautiful golden color.

I have made them several times, and they always turn out perfectly. Plus they’re super easy to make and are ready from start to finish in 3 hours. Not bad at all for a bread recipe!

If you’ve ever been intimidated by the idea of making bread from scratch, don’t be! Here’s a list of some important things to remember:

  • Make sure that the water is lukewarm before adding the yeast.  If the water is too hot, it will kill the yeast, which means your dough will not rise.
  • Try to mash the potatoes until they are very smooth, otherwise you’ll get little pieces of sweet potato in the rolls.
  • Mashed sweet potatoes should be lukewarm before you add them to the rest of the ingredients (This is for same reason as the hot water)
  • Give the dough and rolls time to rise until they double in size. In a warm place, this takes about 45 minutes/1 hour; if your kitchen is very cold, this might take a little longer.

Sweet potatoes can be replaced with regular potatoes, butternut squash, or pumpkin. To make the rolls vegan, brush them with melted vegan butter before baking.

You can also make them ahead of time, and freeze them for up to one month. Allow the baked roll to cool completely, put them in a large ziplock bag, and seal tightly. To reheat, let them thaw on the counter, and then warm them in oven at 150 degrees C ( 300 degrees F)  for 15 minutes.
